Setting the rear point and timing procedure is the same as the front distributer, as is setting the front points. On this distributer, #1-R post should be pointing directly at the front of the engine. The rear distributer is driven off the back of the gear driven generater, near mid engine. The front points control the left bank cylinders, and high tension comes from the second coil on the fire wall.Points setting can be checked with a dwell meter - I believe 30 degrees dwell is corect. 020", loosen the movable base screws and again set the front points to just release a piece of paper. The engine then needs to be turned 45 degrees, until the 5 degree #1-L timing mark is pointed to. Once the rear points are set and timed, lock down the distributers. With a piece of paper in the rear points, and the rotor set at the right place, turn the distributer body until the rear points just release the paper, with the rotor pointing to the proper post, in a counterclockwise rotation. The octane selecter (the degreed plate below each distributer) should be loosened, and be set at 0 degrees. The rear points set is mounted to the distributer timing plate, and is the master point.

That coil is triggered by the rear set of points in the distributer.

This high tension post is powered by the front coil mounted on the firewall of the engine bay. The front distributer #1-R high tension post should be 1 post to the right of the post that points directly to the front of the engine. The front (right bank of the engine) is controlled by the off center post, the rear or centered post controls the (left bank of the engine). The distributer rotor has 2 posts and fire control tabs. This is the distributer closest to the engine cooling fan, and is mounted high on the engine. Ideally, both distributers should be set in slightly different positions.įirst concern is the front distributer. You then need to look at both distributers. Turn the engine until the pointer points to the 5 degree BTC 1-6 R mark.

Under that plate should be a pointer that is used for setting the timing. Loosen the bolts 2 complete turns. You should then be able to slip the plate out from under the bolts, and then tighten them back up finger tight. On the flywheel housing, there is a plate held in place by 2-1/4"x20 threaded bolts (7/16" headed bolts). This is determined by first removing a spark plug from that cylinder, and with a finger over the spark plug hole, have a friend turn the engine over until the finger feels air blown out of the hole. The first thing you need to do is to set the engine at #1-R cylinder (passenger side front side of engine), at the firing point. I'm back, and this is going to be a long post.
